I’m blessed if I’m poor in spirit?

Teaching by Kristin McLendon on Sunday, October 16

In the Sermon on the Mount, the first thing Jesus tells us is, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 4). We know we want this, but what does it mean to be poor in spirit?

Poor in Spirit does not mean that we should be weak or lacking in courage.  It does not mean being physically poor; in fact it has nothing to do with whether you are financially wealthy poor.
To be poor in spirit simply means to recognize that we are nothing without Jesus and we have nothing without Him. Its recognizing our need for Jesus, being fully reliant on Him.

Every day wake up saying, “I need you Jesus.”
We don’t ever graduate from spiritual poverty.
The day you were saved, you recognized your need for Jesus...we need that everyday.

Oswald Chambers said this, “The Sermon on the Mount is not a set of rules and regulations; it is a statement of the life we will live when the Holy Spirit is getting His way.”
Isn’t that good?
It is a description of what we were made for. Holy Spirit, lead us into being poor in spirit. Have Your way.
